Trump nominates a new supreme court justice

http://www.cnn.com/2017/01/31/politics/donald-trump-supreme-court-nominee/

This article describes Donald Trump's decision to appoint Judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court as a replacement of Antonin Scalia who died last year. Gorsuch is a 49 year-old federal judge from the state of Colorado. He will bring hope to Trump and the republican party by trying to make the Supreme Court's decisions favor the conservative side. The Democrats are against this nomination and are upset that the nomination of Judge Merrick Garland was ignored last year. Trump says that he will "find the very best judge in the country for the Supreme Court" to keep the country in tact. If Gorsuch was confirmed, he would balance Scalia's views as a conservative and hopefully bring the same amount of impact to the court as Scalia did.
This article pertains to what we are learning in class by how it describes the court and its justices. This week in class we have discussed who the current court justices are and what they stand for. We also talked about Antonin Scalia and his unfortunate death, and this article perfectly fits with our discussion because it is describing Scalia's replacement.
I believe that Gorsuch will be a great replacement for the new seat on the Supreme Court. With my conservative views, I believe that he will contribute the most to the court by bringing the conservative views, but also being open to hearing the other sides. To be a good leader, you have to contribute but also hear other opinions to become more unified together as a whole. And in my opinion, I think that Gorsuch has all of those qualities which should put him in the Supreme Court.

What's next in Women's Marches?

   http://www.cnn.com/2017/01/23/us/womens-march-next-steps/

This article gives us an update on what the women are going to do next in this movement across America for equal rights. The women are saying that this is "only the beginning". After the inauguration of President Trump, 1 million people went on the streets and protested for Women's rights. To keep the fight running, you can send a postcards to your senators, visit your representatives in person, volunteer for a group, plan an event, and recruit more women to take place in the fight. The women's goal is to make the moment into a movement and make change in this corrupted world.
In class, we have talked about the difference between civil rights and civil liberties. Women rights would fall under the category of civil rights because they are used to protect certain groups and minorities including women. We have also discussed civil disobedience which is peaceful acts without any violence . These women marches would be an example of this because the women are peacefully marching without any violence involved.
I believe in any advancements the women have to offer with these marches. If I could, I would march with them. I believe that women have the right to fight for what they clearly deserve. It is unacceptable for the women to still not have the same rights as men. This problem needs to be solved and fast.

Mom deported In Arizona Immigration

http://www.cnn.com/2017/02/09/us/arizona-guadalupe-garcia-de-rayos-protests/

In this article, a mother of 2 named Guadalupe Garcia de Rayos went to the immigration check-in in Phoenix only to find herself in some trouble. This was her eighth visit since her arrest for using a fake social security number to get through the check in. This time she was detained and deported back to Mexico where she is originally from. The woman claimed that she "has no regrets" over committing the crime of using a fake social security number and living illegally in America. She also said that she did it for her children so that they could have a better future ahead of them.
In class, we have talked about Trump's plan multiple times and his immigration order is definitely apart of it. This situation is a clear example of why Trump placed this order so that he could decrease crime and avoid illegal immigration in the states. This woman was obviously committing a crime and her punishment is to be deported back to where she is suppose to stay legally.
I agree of the punishment that this woman had received. I think if you commit any crime that you need to pay for the consequences. She knew that was she was doing was illegal and she ignored her judgment and went for it. Of course I have sympathy that she wanted a better future for her children, but doing anything illegal for it should not be the way to handle a situation like this.

Travel Ban Separates Somali Refugee Family

http://www.cnn.com/2017/02/21/us/travel-ban-somali-refugees-separated/index.html

In this article, the author describes the difficult situation of the separation of Abdulla and his daughter Batulo. Abdulla is a refugee who was recently deported to America with his family. He thought that he could finally be given a new life in America, but this was not the case. Just as the family was settling into their new home, President Trump signed his Travel Ban executive order. This order banned refugee arrivals for 90 days in seven countries, including Somalia where Batulo is still in. Just as she was about to leave, her trip had to be cancelled due to the travel ban. This left her family in a frantic search for help in reuniting with their daughter again. Back at the refugee camp, Batulo has to move in and depend on another family while she is waiting to return to her family. The family mourn for their daughter every second and are trying to convince Melanie Trump to hear their voice and try to repeal this ban.
In class, we have discussed some of the issues in our current culture war. This week we discussed what a social movement is and the travel ban has certainly started one. In addition, this travel ban has started multiple marches and group gatherings of the refugees.
I do not feel like there can be an opinion of this article. It is simply a terrible situation and nobody should disagree with that. But, I do not agree with this travel ban. For example, just like in this situation in this article, I believe that it just creates separation and a sense of a trap within every refugee. Of course I believe that terrorism needs to be dealt with, but I think they can be other ways of doing this instead of solidifying just seven countries.

Women Set a day for a Strike- Blog 2

http://us.cnn.com/2017/02/15/politics/womens-march-general-strike-date-set/index.html

In this article, the author states that the starters of the women marches in Washington last month has set a date for a strike of women. It will be held on March 8, which is known as the International Day of Women and my birthday! There has been rumors about a strike but they finally set out a day yesterday. The women's purpose is to "outnumber the war of fear, greed and hatred" by showing love and compassion for their rights. On social media, it is said that this will not be the only strike. Women are trying to create over 100 strike actions all across America with the goal of "standing up for America's democratic principles".
In class, we continuously talk about issues that Americans have to face day by day and women's rights fall under those issues. These women simply want equal treatment that the men are given. Just like I said in my article over the marches, they do not want any violence. They want to be equal. With such attention from the news and social media, it is clear that this issue is one that needs to be resolved. If that means to have a day without women, then so be it.
I agree with this strike. As a woman, I believe that we should speak our voice and our worth through any way that we can. I think it is important to have a day without women because I believe that men take women for granted over their worth. This strike could hopefully impact the men to realize how much they need women in their life. And if it doesn't work, at least women put the effort in to make a change in the world. To me, that is most important.

Women Protests Around America

http://www.cnn.com/2017/01/21/politics/trump-women-march-on-washington/

In this article, the author discusses the masses of people protesting in favor of women's rights and against of Trump's view on women. Men and women from all of over the nation came to protest in opposition of the values that Trump apparently stands for. Some marches were held in Sydney, Berlin, London, Paris, Nairobi, Cape Town, Mexico City, and even in Antartica. The author then says that Australia had its first major international march with an estimate of 5,000 people in attendance. At the same time, a group of 30 trump supporters held a rally in Sydney. Some signs said "Women Deserve FUNdamental rights" and "Women's rights are Human rights". This article clearly explained why and what the purpose was for these masses of protests all over America.
In AP Government, we have discussed the Culture War which definitely pertains to this article. In class, we discussed that the culture clash in America is a batter over values. These protests are simply in reaction to women not having the same values as men or even the feeling of no value at all. We also discussed in class that culture conflict is animated by deep differences in people's beliefs about morality. Some women believe that they have the same amount of value as men and some believe that they do not. The conflict is originated by people's beliefs and their thoughts on the subject. There will always be more than one side on every argument or topic.
I am in favor of women marching for their rights. I feel that women definitely do not have the same values as men, and if that means to protest for their rights then I am on their side. Women feel the need that they need to put their full efforts in fighting for their rights. Although I am in favor of the marches, I do not feel that President Trump has values that are not in favor of women. He has not been president for long and I feel that it is too early to decide his views on women.
